Elite Number Four: “Dangerous”

Developed by Frontier Developments and released just this December 2014, ‘Elite: Dangerous’ is the fourth instalment of the Elite video game series. It is, in essence, a first person “shooter game”. However, its more specific genres extend into “space trading”, “combat”, as well as “MMO”. The game allows for both single player modes as well as multiplayer modes online.

Basically, ‘Elite: Dangerous’ is an adventure and action video game that takes place in outer space. There is trading, adventure, and a combat simulator within the game’s gameplay and activities. In ‘Elite: Dangerous’, gamers get to pilot a spacecraft (or spaceship) and explore an open world “galaxy” that was designed based on the actual Milky Way in our world.

The gameplay of ‘Elite: Dangerous’ is essentially open-ended, and the decisions and actions of the players will affect the storyline and narrative within the video game’s world.

The Gameplay of ‘Elite: Dangerous’

This video game, like its predecessors, start off with the player (or players) inside a spaceship and in possession of a small amount of money. This is a medium through which the player may enter and begin making their way within this open space world. How exactly a player makes their way through this world, however, depends on the player in question; for it may or may not be through legal means. To this end, a player may prefer trade or bounty hunting, or even piracy or assassination.

The most unique part of this instalment of the game though, is that the game world for ‘Elite: Dangerous’ is as close as scientifically possible to how our galaxy (the Milky Way) really looks like.

The realism of the game in this instalment is more brutal in a sense. And the design of the video game is much richer with regards to the 3D visuals in the game world. There will also be dynamic day and night cycles within the game that the player can experience and play in. And again, the planets, their relative size, and the moons and suns, and path of the stars, are all designed to be as accurate as possible to the real thing in outer space in our galaxy.

Also, a series of updates to the game to permit even more breath-taking features are in store for ‘Elite: Dangerous’.

This video game allows the player to explore the planets in first person perspective. Cityscapes and landscapes are formed on the planets, and the player can explore and hunt or simply walk through these new worlds. New updates within the game are also supposed to allow players to drive big vehicles across the surface and landscapes of these many planets.

New updates will also allow multi-crew boarding on the spacecraft within the game, as well as facilitate the hijacking and stealing of other spaceships. And this is aside from the other kinds of interactions and reactions a player can have with other players in the game and the Non Player Characters (NPCs) within the game (and the NPCs inside the spaceships).

Players should keep in mind that the storyline and sequence of the game will depend on the actions, decisions and interactions of the players. Hence, which missions, their types, and the kinds of quests that a player (or players) may be exposed to, depends on how the players affect the narrative of the video game. Also, like in the previous instalments, violent and criminal acts such as blowing up an innocent ship will be treated as a criminal offense and will call the world’s authorities in to question the perpetrator and make a record of the crime. Gamers should also be warned that the insectoid, hostile aliens from the original instalment might show up in this game.
